Can someone tell me what medical device company would hire a pharmaceutical sales representative?
From our experience recruiting in the industry, there are a whole slew of companies in the medical device & diagnostics category that routinely recruit talented sales reps from the pharmaceutical sector. The difficult part is that they are not easily categorized. Generally, the most complex medical or surgical equipment companies do not follow this strategy. However, there are companies across the disposable, consumer & ‘less technical’ device categories that are always open to training talented sales professionals on the nuances & specifics of their market, their channel and their product technology. Once again, we apologize it’s not as simple as a pre-determined list of company names with this reputation; however, it is relatively commonplace (more so than most people realize) to see pharmaceutical sales reps crossing the boundaries of the industry and moving into the medical device & diagnostics sector. Don’t shy away from those opportunities. Tout your sales ability & your knowledge of the life sciences industry as a whole and you will be considered as a strong candidate within some organizations.

Many companies have a business casual environment. Any recommendations on how to dress appropriately for an interview?
Don’t fall victim to the casual work environment! In an interview, you must be the best dressed person in the building. The one day you show up in ‘business casual’ is the day the Board of Directors or the Governor will be meeting in the conference room across the hall…and all the employees will be in their Sunday best. The only exception is when provided specific direction from the company ahead of time. It is also perfectly acceptable to ask the HR department for some guidance. Conservative rules the day. The only time we’ve been wrong is at Oakley (you know, the sunglass company). They literally cut the ties off candidates who show up in a suit. This from a company who interviews their prospective employees in real-world ejector seats borrowed from the cockpits of fighter plans. If you know Oakley’s culture, it fits right in. Best advice from Beaker: blue suits for women & men, solid blue or white shirts. Always finish with a conservative tie & black shoes for men. Statistics show, without question, that blue suits encourage acceptance. Let them notice you, not the clothes on your back.
Do you have any recommendation on how many pages a resume should be?
First, it’s important to understand the difference between a CV & a resume: mainly the content, the purpose…and its length. A resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education. The goal is to provide a brief summary of your education & experience. A Curriculum Vitae (or ‘CV), is a longer, more detailed synopsis. It includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details. Of all that we have seen, almost 80% of resumes are two (2) pages in length. An acceptable length is anywhere between 1-4 pages. Even for the most experienced executive, a resume should never exceed these limits, as chances are it will not be entirely read. Just for fun, the longest resume we have ever seen at Beaker was 102 pages…a full fledged CV from a senior scientist in the medical device industry.
