Alkermes and Amylin come down to the wire

by Jeffrey Clark on January 20, 2012

Richard Pops, Alkermes chairman & CEO, discusses the challenges facing the health care industry; FDA approval of a once weekly diabetes drug, and other promising new drug candidates.

These are nervous times at Alkermes and Amylin. Bydureon is a long-acting form of the drug exenatide (Byetta) and was developed through a partnership between Amylin and Alkermes. It is currently under review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This week brough t an ominous lead-in, as the FDA delayed its decision on a diabetes drug from Bristol Myers Squibb. Granted, the BMS drug is in an entirely different class, yet it can’t help make the wait any easier for Alkermes & Amylin. Bydureon is up next with a PDUFA date on January 28th.
